Part Q Window Certification Scheme

Part Q Window Certification Scheme

Our NEW Window Certification Scheme makes Part Q simple!

When supplying external windows to new build, renovation or refurbishment projects which require planning permission, you need to comply with Part Q. But having your own windows Part Q certified can be expensive and time consuming- so we’ve done it for you.

With our new Part Q Window Certification Scheme, you can manufacture officially UKAS tested windows simply by following our tested and certified section drawings, combined with with fitting only our tested and certified components list.

What is Part Q?

Building regulation Part Q / Document Q came into effect on October 1st 2015 and applies to all residential building, renovation or refurbishment projects that require planning permission.

All plans/building notices that are submitted after 1st October 2015 are required comply with Part Q, which relates to any window installed that is easily accessible. There are two ways to determine whether or not a window is classed as easily accessible:

  • If it has any part within 2m vertically of an accessible level surface such as an access balcony.
  • The window is within 2m vertically of a flat or sloping roof (with a pitch of less than 30 degrees) that is with 3.5m of the ground level.

Part Q identifies the use of PAS24 as the standard for window security.

What are the specific requirements for a Part Q Window?

To meet Part Q requirements, windows must meet new standards of robustness, use the approved hardware, and demonstrate proven security/performance.

Windows will meet requirement Q1 if they can resist physical attack by a casual or opportunist burglar by being both:

  1. Sufficiently robust
  2. Fitted with appropriate hardware.

Windows should be made to a design that has been shown by test to meet the security requirements of any of the following:

  1. British Standards publication PAS 24:2012
  2. STS 204 Issue 3:2012
  3. LPS 1175 Issue 7:2012 security rating 1
  4. LPS 2081 issue 1:2015 security rating A

Any test evidence used to confirm the security of a construction should be carefully checked to ensure that it demonstrates compliance that is adequate and that applies to the intended use. Evidence passed from one organisation to another can become unreliable if important details are lost. Small differences in construction can significantly affect the performance of a window.

Why choose the Toolfix Part Q Certification Scheme?

By choosing to use our Part Q Window Certification Scheme you will be able to save a significant amount of money, in comparison to how much it would cost to undergo the tests yourself.

Not only that, but it is much more straightforward and time-efficient to use our certification scheme as all you need to do is follow the Compliance Guide Manual, which has been set out in a way that offers simplicity.

We are able to supply all hardware needed to create UKAS certified windows, meaning you’ll have everything you need, all from one place.

Abrasive Grit Grades – Explained

Abrasive Grit Grades – Explained

Everything You Need To Know About Abrasive Grit & Grading

what do the numbers mean on the back of sanding sheets and what does the ‘P’ stand for?

A common question asked by many, and this blog post will not only answer that question but also give a slightly more in-depth explanation into abrasive grading and grit size.

What do the numbers mean?

As you may already know, the higher the grit number, the finer the abrasive product. This is due to the grit size of an abrasive sheet being the number of sharp particles per square inch of sandpaper. And from the grit size, we get the abrasive grade. This is an indicator of how coarse/fine the sandpaper is and what its grit is in the range of.

So, a larger grit number indicates a smaller abrasive grain and a finer abrasive product.

A “P” in front of the grit size indicates that the product is graded in accordance with the European FEPA standard. You should always look for products with a P in front of the grit size as being measured by this standard ensures for an accurate number and a smooth sanding.

Indication of Use

The terms coarse, medium and fine are often used in conjunction with grit size of abrasive grains. They range from 40 (very coarse) to over 400 (very fine). Good quality sandpaper will have universal sized grit. The size of grit is used to classify the sandpaper by ‘grade’ as follows:

Individual abrasive strips and discs are usually marked on the paper / hook & loops reverse with the grit size (e.g. 100) and/or with the grade (e.g. medium coarse). Grit sizes above 240 are classed as “very fine” and are commonly used for significantly harder, fine surfaces that require special considerations taken to the surface.

Which Grade To Use?

For maximum stock removal when sanding, start with a low grit abrasive (Coarse Graded). Choose the exact grit based on the condition of your wood and work up until you achieve the finish you require. Remember though, you don’t have to use every grit as you go from coarse to fine

For finer work and finishing wood, you’ll need to use a Fine graded abrasive such as 150 grit on open grain wood or 180 on closed. For oil finishes it is best to use even higher up to 240 grit.

Fire Door 5-Step Check – #FireDoorSafetyWeek

5 Step Check – Fire Door Safety Week

Use These 5 Simple Steps To Check The Safety Of Your Fire Door #FireDoorSafetyWeek

As we commence #FireDoorSafetyWeek (24th September – 1st October), the BWF Fire Door Alliance has released a simple 5 Step Check in which you can use to see if your fire doors meet safety regulations.

In this post we will outline the 5 steps and cover why each one is an important indicator as to whether or not your fire door is truly safe.  We will also highlight a few products from our extensive range of hardware & ironmongery that can be used to replace faulty or low quality components (e.g. hinges and intumescent seals).

The Fire Door 5-Step-Check

1. Check For Certification

Every fire door must have a label or a plug to prove that it is a properly certified fire door, and reaches the standards required to protect the building, and more importantly, the staff. If this certificate is missing, report to whoever is in charge of the building, or the fire door supplier for more information.

2. Check The Gaps

Check the gaps around the top and sides of the door are consistently less than 4mm when closed. The gap under the door can be slightly larger (up to 8mm usually), but it does depend on the door. If you can see light under the door, the gap is likely to be too big meaning smoke and flames could potentially pass through the gaps.

3. Check The Seals

It is vital to check if there are any intumescent seals around the door or frame, and if so are they intact with no sign of damage? These seals are usually vital to the fire door’s performance, expanding if in contact with heat to ensure fire and smoke isn’t able to move through the cracks. If there is any visible issues with the seals on the door report it – the door may not be properly maintained and in the intensity of a fire may not protect for a sufficient amount of time.

4. Check The Hinges

There should always be at least three hinges on a fire door. Check the hinges to make sure that they are properly secured to the door, and that all the screws are present. Missing or badly fitted hinges could affect the performance of your fire door, and give less time for staff to evacuate the building.

If you see any problems report it – the door may not be properly maintained and in the intensity of a fire may not perform and hold back the fire as required to.

5. Check The Door Closes Properly

Check how the door closes to ensure that it works properly. If a high quality fire door is opened and let go, it should automatically close by itself by use of a door closer, without anyone needing to push it closed.

Make sure that the door properly latches, and that the door fits properly in the frame. A half open fire door, or one that doesn’t shut completely will not do its job in a fire.
